First Lunar Crescent Dates for
Babylon and Nineveh
(-700 to -599)
Uroš Anderlič
The comparison of 1261 first lunar crescents for Babylon and Nineveh from 701 B.C. to 600 B.C. is given here to proof the usefulness and correctness of nearly all Babylonian first lunar crescent dates during the years -2000 until 1 for Nineveh. The following tables include the Julian Day at Universal Time for Babylon and Nineveh; the astronomical as well as the historical year, the month, and the day of the Julian calendar for both cities; and the difference between the first lunar crescent dates for Babylon and Nineveh.
As found out the first lunar crescent visibility for Babylon and Nineveh in 93.65% of cases appears on the same day. The first lunar crescent for Babylon in 6.11% of cases occurs one day earlier than it does for Nineveh. The reason is that Babylon lies in a more southerly position than Nineveh. On the other hand, the first lunar crescent appears for Babylon in 0.24% one day later than it does for Nineveh. In this case the reason is that Nineveh lies in a more westerly direction than Babylon. Therefore, the day difference between the first lunar crescent visibility for Babylon and Nineveh depends mainly on the geographical latitude and seldomly on the geographical longitude.
